Serendipity. A WordPress Mosaic Photo Gallery

A photo gallery block that partitions the space you give it into unequal tiles, and crops each photograph to fit its tile. Keep the composition you like, at desktop, tablet and mobile.

A Serendipity gallery: twelve photographs, from a stream in a misty forest to a red poppy and a bee on lavender, cropped into a mosaic of unequal tiles that fills its space.

A mosaic, not a grid

Serendipity partitions the space you give a gallery into unequal tiles and crops each photograph to fit its tile, so the gallery fills that space instead of running on down the page. Refresh the composition until you like it, then save it. Desktop, tablet and mobile each keep a layout of their own, and a breakpoint you have not saved borrows the nearest one.

The block is the gallery

There is no gallery post type, no shortcode and no separate screen to build it on. Add a Serendipity Gallery block, choose your photographs, and the gallery lives in the post where you put it. Every gallery setting lives on the gallery itself. Start from one of four block patterns, or from an empty block.

Layout Studio: compose it yourself

Serendipity Deluxe puts the composition in your hands, right on the editor canvas. Drag the seam between two tiles to resize them, or Tab to a seam and nudge it with the arrow keys. Drag one photograph onto another to swap them, and use pan & tilt to choose where each one is cropped inside its tile. Your galleries and saved layouts carry over unchanged.
Laid out on the first paint

A saved layout is written into the page by the server, so the gallery is in place before any script runs. Its script and stylesheet load only on pages that have a gallery.

Bring your own lightbox

By default, each photograph links to its full-size file and the gallery is grouped, so the lightbox plugin you already run can pick it up. Four were tested and picked it up with no configuration:

  • Firelight (Easy FancyBox)
  • Responsive Lightbox & Gallery
  • FooBox
  • Lightbox with PhotoSwipe

Serendipity Deluxe adds a built-in carousel if you would rather not run one.

Made for the Block Editor

Wide and full alignment, block patterns, and a desktop, tablet and mobile switcher in the block toolbar that shows which breakpoints have a saved layout.
